If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator.
If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist.
If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist.
If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer.
But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God, in his great love, sent us a Saviour.

Spot on. I was at my kids' church service today. It had all the right ingredients for a Christmas service: carols, violins, nativity play, prayers, message. Awful as the violin playing was, the message was worse. There's hope that the players will improve with practise, with the message that was given, there's no hope. Apparently the real message of Christmas is to spread joy and peace, and the way to do this is to think kind thoughts about people, say a prayer for them, and help your parents by tidying your room! We're doomed! If we are to dig deeper into ourselves and turn over a new leaf in an effort to spread joy and peace then it will never happen - certainly not in any lasting and sustained way. That's why the real message this Christmas and every Christmas is that a Saviour has come to rescue us from ourselves (and eternal doom). He is our hope, our joy and our peace. Why do people miss the opportunity to say this, and instead give trite, insipid nonsense which is no use to anyone?
